As Your City Commissioner

Part of my duties as your City Commissioner is to represent Tamarac in different local, state and national organizations.  This month I’m traveling to several seminars, conferences and meetings to do just that.

  • I recently attended the Florida League of Cities' Institute for Elected Municipal Officials in Tampa, a course that teaches newly elected officials the basics of city government, covering topics such as the structure and function of cities, intergovernmental relations, and Florida ethics law. I learned a lot and had the pleasure of meeting other newly elected officials from across the state – it’s always interesting to hear about how things are done in other cities.
  • As a member of the Florida League of Cities' Utilities, Natural Resources & Public Works Committee, I'll attend a policy meeting in Orlando June 15 – 17.  This committee addresses policies specific to municipal concerns about coastal management, energy, environmental and wetlands permitting, hazardous and toxic wastes, recycling, solid waste collection and disposal, stormwater, wastewater treatment and reuse, water management, and water quality and quantity. We’ll work on the League’s positions on these issues and possible legislation for the next legislative session.
  • I’ll be in Cleveland June 19 – 24 for two National League of Cities (NLC) meetings. The first is a leadership meeting discussing NLC policy positions on the same natural resource and utilities issues addressed at the Florida League meeting in Orlando.  I’ll also participate in the Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) Summer Conference. WIMG strives to raise awareness about issues of concern to women, and encourages them to seek public office in their communities.

I look forward to participating, learning and bringing back information and ideas from these meetings to share with our City.
